At this point of our lives, there is probably nothing that will beat how naturally active our metabolisms were between the ages of 7-19. It’s quite a bummer to realize the nosedive it took and the amount of effort we now have to make everyday to prioritize our metabolism. I, for one, miss the good ole days! Isn’t it great how many articles you come across that give you how-to tips on boosting a lackluster metabolism (including this one, haha)? While I wish I had all the answers for us 30 year olds, each of our bodies are different and with nutrition science constantly changing, we would drive ourselves crazy trying to keep up with the trends. For today, however, Health Like Me is giving you three quick, no fuss rules that transcend the ever-changing trends about our metabolism according to fitness guru, Jillian Michaels. Let’s start with what you should be eating day-in and day-our: Fiber and Iodine-rich food. The fiber is a gimme. If you have trouble locating which foods are rich in fiber, head in over to Pinterest! Iodine-rich food might be a bit more of a challenge. But, here’s a quick 101:
Next up, stay away form sugar, processed grains and processed soy. Wait a minute! Are you telling me that the soy I habitually substitute in my chai tea is doing more harm than good?! Maybe not. But thankfully, the only time I enjoy soy is every so often in my chait tea. Lastly, eat spicy foods! According to Healthline's article about 10 Ways to Boost Metabolism, eating peppers or other spices that contain a substance called capsaicin could have the effect of burning 10 additional calories a meal. While that might not be super significant — especially if you don't actively eat peppers every single mean — it's worth noting that when added to an already metabolism-boosting diet, this gives the pepper eating individuals a slight advantage! All in all, if you treat your body they way it deserves, it will be just as kind to you. And that includes a healthy metabolism based on your specific body regulation!
Keep these three habits in mind while sustaining a steady workout and see what I mean. Don't forget to leave comments below about any effects you've noticed! It would be disastrously hard for me though since I am a Pesco Pollo Vegetarian. No really! It's an actual form of vegetarianism and it describes someone who only eats chicken and fish. I rely heavily on the benefits of fish like omega-3 fatty acids and being a great source of protein since I don't obtain my needed protein from red meat. So why should I be so shocked when I came across so many articles detailing the risks of eating seafood? With every healthy choice we make, there will always be a caveat. Sigh. So fish? Good of bad? Let us count the ways. Friendly swimmers -What do we know in spades about the benefits of consuming fish? Well, you can't go anywhere without hearing that seafood in general is quintessential to maintaining a healthy diet because you've got your needed protein, vitamin D and omega-3. Seafood also is low in fat and has selenium, magnesium, and also reduces the risk of arthritis, Alzheimer's, diabetes, depression, and having a stroke. So basically, as long as you're not frying your fish or dousing your lobster in gobs of melted butter, you can't go wrong with fish! But let's "dive" into where most of us go wrong with eating seafood. Sea Enemies -
We've all been through a salmonella chicken scare at least three times in our lives already. But sushi carries an even higher risk because the whole point of this delicacy is that it's raw fish. What other risks? Listeria. Tapeworms. Just to name a couple. How Much Seafood is the Perfect Amount? -There is no easy way to directly point to what is the proper amount of seafood we should be eating. While raw fish and shark are "duhs" on the no-eat train, it's probably also best to ask where your fish is coming from. Fish from higher-polluted waters will more likely than not contain dangerous amounts of Mercury. So unfortunately, the debate lives on! It really isn't a risk or a benefit. It all has to do with your consumption amount and where your fish is coming from. Ask questions and know what your fish actually looks like because, believe it or not, most fish retailers and/or restaurants are jumping on the bandwagon of mislabeling their fish. Terrible! See what I mean below!
